Review of Mount Vernon, Education site

https://www.mountvernon.org/education

The Website George Washington’s Mount Vernon is the official website for the house and property of the first United States president, George Washington. Owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (just like the house and property itself), the website allows one to buy tickets to visit the property and information on the house and home as well as its past owner. There are multiple elements to the site, however, the section I will be focusing on the most is the education tab with an entire library’s worth of primary and secondary sources as well as interactive tools, educational videos, student contests, and resources for teachers and homeschool educators alike. This should not distract from the well of information the site has to offer outside of the education tab, such as the entirety of George Washington’s life and career, the history of the restoration of his home, the actual Washington library, and, of course, anything you would need to know about the home and property. Each of these tabs are easily accessible and easily read with bright white letters on a blue background right at the top of the page which is always available, even after falling down the deepest rabbit hole.

As stated, this website is owned and run by the same organization that owns the property and who are actively restoring and preserving the estate, that is, The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. The founder of the organization was a woman named Ann Pamela Cunningham who started the association in 1858 with the desire to rescue George Washington’s mansion. Today the association stands twenty-six members strong from all over the United States. You can find their relevant information underneath the preservation tab where there is other information in regards to the association. These ladies have done an incredible job in collecting, restoring, and preserving not only the estate, but materials from the time period, documents pertaining to members of the Washington family, and accurate architectural techniques dating to the 18th century. As they are a non-profit organization that relies entirely on donations and guest visiting fees, it is safe to assume that their information is carefully selected and accurate. Because they are making no money off of the education they provide, there is little reason to suspect that the Ladies’ Association cannot be trusted. While there could certainly be some implicit bias towards the actions of George Washington and his legacy, the Ladies’ Association and the website do not shy away from the past president’s ownership of enslaved people and his inaction towards slavery as an institution in America (though they do provide some rather handy excuses as to why he did so).

This website is ultimately geared to a variety of people in various different points in their life. Because it acts as a portal for tickets, a public access library, and an advertisement for the estate, there’s something for everyone including children, the elderly, and students in university. The website is easy to use and even features a search bar to look up anything specific a visitor or researcher might want to look for. The tagline for the education tab states, “Mount Vernon is dedicated to teaching people around the world about the life and legacies of George Washington,” and as far as that statement goes, the website succeeds with flying colors. Anything anyone would like to know about the iconic American figure and his associates can be located in various different spots under various different tabs across the entire site. The information is accurate, cited, and incredibly insightful, not only as a window into the life of George Washington himself, but also life as a whole for Americans in the 18th century. Both the primary source and secondary source tabs include exclusive documents that each have an author, a date, and a publisher (when applicable). Anything that can’t be found under the education tab can be easily found under the Washington Library tab, which has even more sources to peruse and read. As far as educating the world and fellow Americans, the website does a spectacular job. If a student wanted to use this website to find sources for a paper or a project, it would be completely safe to do so, as well as justified!

Ultimately, I think that George Washington’s Mount Vernon is a spectacular website for information not only on the estate, but on George Washington as a person, the hand he had in the American Revolution and the founding of our government, and life in early America as a whole. Ran by a non-profit organization composed entirely of women from across the nation, the website’s information is accurate, easy to find, and reliable. While not immune to bias and perhaps a tendency to glorify the first American president, the information presented on the site is not edited or censored and therefore allows visitors to come to their own conclusions about the various historical figures that had a hand in shaping our nation. Overall this site serves as a wonderful introduction to the history of Revolutionary America, as well as a jumping point for various research questions. While I wouldn’t necessarily consider the site itself scholarly, the information it contains certainly is, and as it is easily accessible, is perfect for the education of people around the world, just like intended.
