Review of George Washington’s Mount Vernon

https://www.mountvernon.org/

The George Washington’s Mount Vernon website was made by The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA). It is known as the oldest women’s patriotic society in the United States and has been dedicated to preserving George Washington’s Mount Vernon for over 150 years. Being dedicated to the preservation and memory of George Washington does leave some room for biases toward him. Throughout the website, Washington is painted how he historically has been–as a noble and resilient leader. However, I do not believe this bias would result in inaccurate historical accounts of
Washington, which aren’t present in the website. Although he did things that were wrong in the eyes of today, for his time he was a heroic inspiration to everyone. The website is intended for the general public, but also specifically for those in the education system, as it devotes an entire section of the website to teachers and home educators. Both students and teachers are targeted as well because they offer free admission for children and host educational events taught by K-12 teachers through fellowships.
Students and teachers are pictured throughout the entire website.

The website is very well organized and easy to navigate. The drop down navigation provides many opportunities to explore different subcategories of relevance. Each of these subcategories contain sidebars with sections that provide an even further in depth exploration and information of specific aspects of the section. Any related topics mentioned while discussing a specific topic are underlined and free to click on, which will lead to a different page with information on whatever word or name was clicked on. With most websites, it is easy to get lost that way and end up having
difficulty returning to whatever page one was on before, but this website provides your exact location within the website next to a little icon of a house. The actions next to it is how one would have navigated to that page from the original home page. This element
of the website is very helpful and makes it easy to remember how to access desired information without getting lost or having to search for unnecessarily long periods of time.

The website offers a carousel at the bottom of the entire website. The carousel contains information on what was happening in George Washington’s life today 250 years ago. This aspect of the website is interesting, engaging, and very unique. An historical timeline centered around Washington is also provided on the page about his role in the French and Indian War. The site’s information is accurate, as videos, maps, books, and other pages of the website are included along with the description of almost every page.

Overall, this site contributes greatly to the knowledge of the American Revolution. It provides numerous pages of context to the events of the Revolution and the crucial role Washington had in it and in America’s victory. The network of people Washington had contact with gives an accurate view on what life was like for the colonists and African Americans who were soldiers, spies, and/or loyalists during the Revolution. We gain insight on how the Revolution impacted Washington in all of the battles he fought in. This website is a hub of knowledge on colonial America that provides in-depth descriptions of George Washington and the contexts in which he lived in an engaging and organized method.
