The website that I have chosen to review is George Washington’s Mount Vernon, specifically the education portion of the site. The website is continuously updated in order to include things about a certain day in history. This website works with the actual Mount Vernon, which is the historic home of George Washington and has been converted into a museum dedicated to George Washington’s life. This webpage is a hub of information aimed at all sorts of people to teach them things about early American History and the Revolutionary War. It offers primary and secondary sources, interactive tools, and videos to inform and educate about this time period. This website is meant as academic support in order to help educate about this time period, as well as build upon the actual museum.
The authors of this site are more institutional rather than individual, with the content being created and maintained by Mount Vernon’s Education Department, which is in turn run by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving Washington’s estate and educating people about his life. The website does not list individual authors, which makes it hard to assess its academic authority beyond the authority that comes with it being a museum website. There is also a bit of a bias because this website relies on donations and website traffic, so the website makes a point to highlight what Mount Vernon offers in order to increase donations.
The intended audience of the site includes a broad range of people, all the way from teachers looking for some supplemental information for their class, to homeschool educators, even including a homeschool section. The structure of the website is really about education rather than just browsing, including interactive tools and videos that can engage audiences. The organization and layout of the website are very intuitive and clearly list sections of the website, making navigation straightforward. All of the links were functional and loaded quickly.
In terms of the value of the website, it offers a lot of unique and valuable resources that go deep into the history of the time period. Its primary sources are very good for research for writing a paper or studying for a test. Interactive tools can help to make studying about the Revolutionary War livelier. Even though historical facts about George Washington are available elsewhere, the amount and easy access of information on this website set it apart from other, more generic history websites. The website also has a lesson plan section that provides even more educational value. One critique about the website, I would say, is that the references and citations are not very clear, so putting them in their own section would make transparency better.
Overall, the website provides a good resource for providing educational content about George Washington and Revolutionary America. The site meets the goal of its exploration of these topics as well. It serves all kinds of people who are eager to learn about life during this time period. The depth of the available information on this website makes it an invaluable and significant resource for this time period. It has strong primary source availability, and resources for teachers outweigh any of its shortcomings that make valuable in the broad landscape of historical websites.
